What Is Triple Solitaire?

Triple Solitaire, also called Triple Klondike, is Klondike Solitaire played with three shuffled decks. A hundred and five cards are dealt into fourteen columns of growing length, from one card to fourteen, and the remaining fifty-one wait in the stock. There are twelve foundations - three for each suit - and every one of them runs from Ace to King, exactly as in the classic game.

This is the largest of the Klondike family, and it plays differently for that reason alone. Fourteen columns mean there is almost always a legal move somewhere, so the game rarely ends early; the challenge moves from finding a move to choosing the right one, and from surviving to finishing.

How to Play Triple Solitaire?

The objective is to move all 156 cards onto the twelve foundations, each sorted by suit from Ace to King. Everything else works as in Klondike.

• Fourteen columns are dealt in a staircase, one to fourteen cards, and a fifteenth column starts empty, with only the top card of each column face up.
• On the table, build down in alternating colours, and move ordered sequences together.
• An empty column takes a King, or a sequence starting with one - and there are twelve Kings in the deal.
• The twelve foundations start with Aces and build up by suit: three piles per suit, any Ace of that suit opens any of them.
• Click the stock to turn one card at a time. The waste pile returns to the stock when it empties, without a limit on passes.
• The game is won when all twelve foundations are complete.

How to Win Triple Solitaire?

With three decks the danger is not getting stuck - it is drifting. These habits keep the game moving forward instead of sideways.

• Count what a move opens. On fourteen columns there is always something to shuffle around; the moves that matter are the ones that turn a face-down card face up.
• Hold low cards back. With three of every card, a 4 you keep on the table is far more useful than a 4 you send to a foundation too early.
• Do not spend an empty column cheaply. Twelve Kings compete for it, and the King you place there decides which sequence can grow.
• Attack the long columns. The fourteenth column buries thirteen cards, and the game is not really open until it is dug out.
