How to play Golf Solitaire
The table is seven columns of five cards, all face up, so nothing is hidden from you: everything you need to plan is on the screen from the first second. Below them sit the stock and a single waste pile, and that waste pile is the only place a card can go.
A card plays when its rank is one away from the top of the waste - up or down, either direction, any suit. On a 7 you may play a 6 or an 8. Only the bottom card of a column is available; the cards above it wait their turn.
When nothing fits, click the stock to turn one card onto the waste and change what you can reach. There is no redeal in Golf: those seventeen cards are all you get, so every click of the stock is a decision, not a reflex.
The rule that makes the game
- A King is a dead end - nothing is one rank above it, so only a Queen ever plays onto it.
- An Ace takes only a 2, for the same reason in the other direction.
- Runs are what win rounds: a 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 chain clears half a column in one breath.
How to win more often
Golf rewards looking before touching. The cards are all visible, so the question is never what is there - it is which order to take them in.
- Watch the long columns. A round is usually lost because one column still stands tall when the stock runs dry, not because you missed a clever move early.
- Prefer the move that opens a card you need next. Two cards may both be legal; only one of them keeps the chain alive.
- Count what is left before you turn a stock card. It is the one resource in the game that never comes back.
Every deal here can be won
A random Golf deal is often impossible - the cards simply do not connect, and no amount of thinking helps. Before a round is handed to you, our game plays it through to the end, and a deal that cannot be cleared is thrown away. So when you lose, the win was there and the order was wrong - which is the whole pleasure of the game.
Try other solitaire games
TriPeaks
The closest relative of Golf: TriPeaks solitaire uses the same one-up-one-down move, but the table is three overlapping peaks, and the King and Ace connect, so the chains run further.
Klondike Solitaire
Classic Solitaire is the game most people mean by the word: build four foundations by suit, from Ace upward, and dig through the tableau to find what you need.
Spider Solitaire
In Spider solitaire you build descending runs in one suit and remove them from the table. Two decks, ten columns, and far more room to manoeuvre than Golf allows.
