How to Set Up Spider Solitaire with One Deck (Spiderette)

Solitaires Team

Solitaire Spiderette is a variation of the classic and most complex Solitaire Spider. Here we also build full descending sequences of 4 suits in the tableau zone, but unlike the classic Spider this game uses one deck of cards. Although the playing field is smaller and the game itself is faster, it is even harder to win than Spider Solitaire. Therefore, Spiderette is a real challenge for puzzle lovers!

Layout of Spiderette

Layout of Spiderette

The game contains tableau, foundation, and stockpile zones. Tableau, as well as in classic Solitaires, consists of 7 columns containing from 1 to 7 cards. So, let's get to the layout. Take a traditional 52-card pack, discard Joker cards, shuffle the cards, and begin.

Step 1. The Basement of Solitaire Spiderette Layout

Lay out the first seven cards of the desk in a row. Firstly, put one card face up to your left side. Then deal the row containing of six cards to the right of the first card, all face down. That is the groundwork for the tableau piles.

Step 2: Forming the Second Row

Now, place one card face up on the second pile, making sure it slightly overlaps the face-down card. Deal the following five cards face down, each one partially covering the face-down card beneath it. All subsequent rows of cards will need to be dealt so that the bottom card is slightly shifted to form a “ladder”.

Step 3: Forming the Third Row

Now skip the first and second piles and deal the next five cards starting with the third pile – the first card face up, four next cards face down.

Step 4: Forming the Fourth Row

Now skip the first, second, and third pile and deal the next four cards starting with the fourth pile – the first card face up, three cards face down. Now that’s easy, isn’t it?

Deal the last card in the tableau area – put it face up on the seventh pile. We’ve finished creating a tableau zone. Your game area looks like this now:

Step 8. Create a Stockpile

All the cards that are left will be your stockpile. Place them face down in the top left corner above the tableau. You will use the stockpile during the game.

Step 9: Identify the Area for the Foundation Piles

The upper right corner is a place where the full sequences of cards you’ve created during the game will be stored. Designate a place for the four piles, which will be filled in as your success in the game progresses.

Rules of Spiderette

The main goal of Solitaire Spiderette is to create complete descending sequences of cards in each of the four suits - from kings to aces. Although the layout is different, the rules of Spiderette are the same as the rules of classic Spider.

  • While creating sequences, you are allowed not to take into account the suits. It is only necessary to keep the descending order. For example, the three of diamonds can be moved to the four of any suit.
  • Though creating sequences doesn’t take suits into account, order in one suit is obligatory to move them. It is impossible to move differently-suited sequences.
  • The completed sequence from king to ace of one suit can be transferred from the tableau to the foundation pile.
  • When a column is empty, any card or valid sequence may be placed in that space. Use it to start a new sequence, or to make place for other moves by revealing important blocked cards.
  • When you run out of possible moves within the tableau, you can deal 7 more cards from the stockpile. Note that there is no dealing when there is an empty column.

The game of Spiderette is won when all cards are successfully arranged into complete sequences and removed from the tableau areas.

We wish you good luck in this difficult card game! If you want to practice online some other types of Solitaires, try Spider Solitaire, Klondike Solitaire, or Pyramid Solitaire for a more relaxed gameplay.
